Installation

LiveControl can now be more simply installed using the provider installer.

Video Tutorial from LoopsinWorship

Installation video kindly provided by www.loopsinworship.com

Prerequisites

  1. You first need TouchOSC installed on your iPod/iPad. Purchase TouchOSC from the Apple Store for $4.99
  2. You also need the TouchOSC template editor from hexler.net in order to upload the LiveControl template to your device
  3. Make sure you are running at least Ableton Live 8.1.
  4. Connect your iPod/iPad to the same network as your computer using either a router or an ad-hoc network
  5. On Windows you need to install Bonjour Print Services if you dont have iTunes installed
  6. Download the LiveControl installer for Mac or Windows

Configure TouchOSC

  1. Open the LiveControl template for TouchOSC (either LiveControl.touchosc or LiveControl_iPad.touchosc) in the TouchOSC editor.
  2. Upload to TouchOSC using the Sync function
You computer should appear in the list of hosts, select it to upload the template:
  3. Select this template inside TouchOSC (its called Livecontrol).
  4. Open the LiveControl installer application by double clicking LiveControl on mac or LiveControl/LiveControl.exe on windows
  5. Wait for 10 seconds, then select “LiveControl” from the “Found Hosts” section of TouchOSC’s Network configuration. Set the incoming port to 5001 (outgoing should be automatically set to 5000)
  6. Go back to the main TouchOSC screen and hit done to load the template. TouchOSC should look like the following on the iPod Touch:

Install and Configure LiveControl

  1. Run “Install LiveControl.jar”, this will install the MIDI Remote Script into your Ableton Live Directory. When prompted selected your Ableton Directory in the format Live x.x.x. The installer should look like the following:
  2. Copy the LiveControl.app (mac) or LiveControl folder (win) to your computer and launch the application, if you havnt already when configuring TouchOSC.
  3. LiveControl will detect any devices attached to your network. Select a MIDI port you would like to use for MIDI input. On windows, install MIDI Yoke. On Mac the LiveControl.app provides two midi ports (from LiveControl 1 and 2).
  4. Start Ableton Live and goto Preferences, then MIDI Preferences. Select LiveControl_TO from the control surfaces list. Leave MIDI In/Out ports empty. Make sure the MIDI port you selected above is enabled.
  5. The red (or another colour if its not the first MIDI remote script) selection ring should appear in Ableton Live and the template in TouchOSC should be updated

Are you on windows or osx and where is python installed? If theres no red ring there is either a problem with python, or the program cant bind to the local ip address.

Maybe the simple process of uploading the template via TouchOSC Editor should be added to the installation description. It took me some time to figure out it works out when started with the sync-button within TouchOSC Editor. I found the path-descriptions rather confusing, too. “Right-click: Live.app -> show package contents” would be less confusing.
I am on OSX 10.6.3 and use an iphone 3GS as the remote-device and everything worked out when I did it exactly as described above.

Yes i agree about uploading the template. Its just assumed knowledge at the moment, ill make those instructions clearer. I’ll fix the bit about the path on mac too 🙂

      Hi !
      Great work, congratulation !

Everything is working if I use an external wi-fi connection. But if I create a network with my mac and I connect the Iphone to it, there is some trouble.
The connection from mac/live to Iphone/touchOSC is OK but the connection from IPhone/TouchOSC to mac/Live is not working most of the time.
Any idea about this problem ? How can I connect my Iphone with touchOSC to my mac without an internet wireless connection ?
      Thank

I’m starting to go mad about this 😀 I installed python, put the unzipped txt and directory where they belong and uploaded on ipad the template. When i select livecontrol_to as control surface what i should put as input and output? The networking works, if i open osculator and set it to listen on 5000 it recognizes all commands on the ipad (nav, fader even accellerometer), but i can’t understand how to make it work on ableton! What i’m doing wrong? All is in the right place and network is working… Plz help :*

Osculator should be closed before you open ableton. Osculator is not required for this to work. If you grab the latest zip (i changed some things last night) it doesnt need python to be installed either. Do you get the red box in ableton when you select the control surface? If not something is wrong with your ip settings in the config file.

Ok thanks i fixed the ip issue! There’s only one lasting strange bug, in the clip matrix the buttons on the far right wich are assigned to: up down left right, stop all clips and shift gets the name from the first 6 scene names and actually became scene launch buttons! Even if i scroll down from another page (cant from clip matrix because the rename/remap issue) those buttons remain mapped to only the first four scenes. Am i doing something wrong?

    • I can get everything to work perfectly when I am connected to a network, but when I create a network with my Macbook Pro and connect directly with my iPhone, I can’t figure out the IP addresses for each. How do I find each device name so I can use that instead, like Gosha said previously?

Does the installer not show touchosc and hence its ip address? Get IP should list all your local ip addresses too:

    • ST8

nope, you dont need python installed anymore!

    • Darren

One thing that I've noticed while using an internal network (don't have an external wi-fi network where i'm at right now, so can't speak for that) is that you have to repeat the IP configuration process with each start up…including deleting the prior saved txt document with ip and port settings in your users library, for the internal network to work properly/completely, and thus allowing full bi-directional communication and control again. Am I right in this observation and does it make sense?
      Thanks again!!!!!

    • ST8

I'm going to try and move the installer over to bonjour hostnames instead, so you wont need to configure the ips each time. The hostname shouldnt change between ip changes

    • nomad cinema

I was just testing the new template and most of the buttons work, but a few do nothing: e.g., Scenes 1-7 (in Clip Launcher page), Start-Stop-Record (in Mixer page). Do these buttons work for anyone else?

    • ST8

      ipad template i take it?

    • nomad cinema

      Yes, the iPad template.

    • Hi ST8,
      Great work here!
Just a candid question, could you elaborate on why OSCulator should be closed?
I don't seem to understand why this should ask for trouble?
      Cheers,
      Cam

    • Hey,
There are some tips about connecting an iPhone or an iPad to your computer without using a wireless router on OSCulator's FAQ (http://osculator.net/doc/faq:iphone#iphone_ipad…). Those hints are not exclusively related to OSCulator so I think this might be of some interest to you.

      Best,
      Cam

    • ST8

Some people have been running osculator on the same ports as LiveControl. If OSCulator is started on the livecontrol ports, livecontrol wont be able to bind to it and wont work.

You're fine to run osculator on any ports other than 5000/5001 though 🙂

      good work!

    • ST8

Pilot effects how? Device control gives you access to any effect?

    • mrdoit

I installed this on Windows and it took me a few minutes to realized that I needed to install “Bonjour Print Services for Windows”. I mostly use a PC so I wasn't sure what Bonjour was. Might be a good idea to add this as a note in the Prerequisites.

Once I installed that, everything worked like a charm. Excellent job and thank you very much for this!! Apple should give you some sort of commission since this is the main reason why I just purchased an iPad.

    • Wow, thanks for a great app! This just made TouchOSC->Ableton Live a reality for me.

I hope you add support for A/B selection by track and a crossfader… then this will truly be a viable alternative to the APC40.

      Nice work.

    • ST8

You need to make sure Live is close when you run the intsaller, sounds like it hasnt overwritten your installation with the latest files. Try the latest installer and delete your LiveControl_TO folder before installing!

    • ST8

Ahh yes of course, id forgotten that from the instructions!

    • ST8

Ahh yes, crossfader is easy to add, but to which page? 😉

    • nomad cinema

I removed the old LiveControl_TO folder before installing, but when I ran the installer, it didn't install anything (even though the installer thinks it did). When I run Ableton Live, LiveControl_TO no longer shows up among my advanced control devices. I checked the MIDI Remote Scripts folder after installation and there's nothing in it related to LiveControl. Is the installer working with OS 10.5.8? If I reinsert the old LiveControl_TO folder manually, what missing elements do I need to add from the new installer?

    • ST8

windows or mac? when you hit install does it say: copying x.py….. etc etc? Wonder if i broke the installer

    • prack!

yes! great app! thanks. I used Ableton Live but i'm a vj, not a musician. do you think its possible to make some app like this but to work with vidvox's vdmx? its a vj program and work very fine with osc protocol. I used TouchOSC with vdmx but i want to assign every parameter, like in any other app, i guest…
anyway, thanx a lot. with live works really great!
      cheers!

    • joshyftw

I need some help! I've followed the instructions to the letter, and installed Bonjour Print Services for Windows (Will someone tell me why this is needed? Bonjour itself is installed with iTunes, and we all have that!). Still, my iPhone doesn't appear in the “Automatic Configuration (Bonjour Services) box. What's going wrong?

P.S. No firewall, and TouchOSC works fine with PureData.

    • joshyftw

Also, When I select LiveControl in the “Found Hosts” section of TouchOSC, nothing happens, but the network activity icon (circular thing next to the WiFi icon) continually circles around.

    • nomad cinema

Mac OS 10.5.8. When I start the installation, it indicates “copying x.py, etc.,” but doesn't actually install anything.

    • ST8

i personally do not have itunes installed on my windows box, if you dont you need the bonjour services.

have you loaded the template in touchosc? TouchOSC doesnt register the service until the template is actually loaded and running.

Selecting the found host “livecontrol” option just changes the host field, it doesnt connect or anything

    • jasonswe

Hello, thank you for the nice software! I have a little problem after all is installed. Ableton is showing the red box in session view and talking fine with TouchOSC but TouchOSC is NOT talking with Ableton. Any ideas? Everything is exactly as you say to install it. All ports are configured exactly as instructed. It is only that the remote does not talk to Live 🙁

    • MotorYogurt

Ableton freezes when I select “LiveControl_TO” in the drop down box for control surface… Tried a reinstall still no luck.

    • gadgetboy2000

    • ST8

      what version of live?

    • ST8

    • gadgetboy2000

      exits on code 255..

    • gadgetboy2000

is there anything I can do to help with the PPC testing?

    • josh

      same prob, osx 10.6 / ableton 8.1
if i try to browse to the live app folder, it is grayed out, if i copy the folder location it still pretends to install but there is nothing there…

    • josh

any way I can manually install, I sooooo need this

    • sg255

I'm trying this on windows, and even though it says “installation complete”, the livecontrol_TO option isn't in the MIDI menu.

    • sg255

I've tried installing the LiveControl_TO folder somewhere else and just copy and pasting it into the MIDI remote scripts folder in Live, but whenever I choose it in the preferences menu, the whole thing freezes.

    • josh

I simply cannot find the right directory or the installation simply isn't working
I have osx 10.6.3, live suite 8.1 (it was free…), and when I browse to select the live directory under applications, it is grayed out, even when manually inputing /Applications/Live.app it goes thru the motions of installing but I cannot find the LiveControl preset from the control surfaces.
Please advise I would def consider donating to the cause if I could get this up and running, and appreciate your hard work very much.

    • Jay

why don't you use a legit copy of live first.

    • ST8

erm it should be something like /Applications/Live x.x.x/ not directly into the Live.app. The program appends the path Live.app/Contents/App-Resources/MIDI Remote Scripts

    • ST8

      what version of Live?

    • sg255

      Live lite 8.1.3

    • ST8

i'll have to test this on Live Lite, not something ive tested!

    • dirkdirgler

I tried everything but the damn thing can't connect…
Always get tha same “connection failed! – Timed out” error in TouchOSC.
Don't use firewall or something.I can use TouchOSC's layouts with Ableton but can't load
LiveControl inside the presets..Could someone please guide me to this?
Here are the Network settings i've put in TouchOSC:

Host: 192.168.1.6 (my ethernet's local IP)
      Port OUT: 5000
      Port IN: 5001

the names in the clips won't show up in touch osc.

I noticed that once Livecontrol is install in the proper places. I noticed that THERE are NO IAC drivers. Is that the way it is supposed to be. Do i need the IAC Drivers. Basically can not control clips etc

    • ST8

you dont need the iac drivers for this to work, it doesnt have any midi input/output as such. Do you get the red ring when you select the midi remote script?

    • John Robinson

Hi – loving the program but seem to have found one small bug 🙁
I am used to using very large sets… on each channel as many as 32 clips, and maybe 16 channels. Live handles this without issue.
When I use LiveControl, initially everything is fine… I can hit the down button and drop down to the next block of 7 clips. However, if I try to go down further (to the next 7 clips), things go bad. Live continues happily enough but control is lost between LiveControl (on an iPad) and Live.
Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong or is LiveControl limited to 14 clips?
      Many thanks

Can you enable debugging and start the log server then start Live. You should get some debug output you can email me.

Works ok with my liveset (8 tracks, 150 scenes or so). do you have non ascii characters in your clip names?

    • fopyx

TouchOSC when i select LiveControl_TO in Ableton updates, i see the song nabe, but i can't control them!!!

In ableton i don't see under MIDI ports any configurations, just everything empty..

      Can someone help me?? 🙁

    • ST8

do you have a firewall running?

    • Jason

No firewall and no firewall security activated within the router either.

    • ST8

You can try an ip in the TouchOSC network settings instead of a hostname. Should be the same as the local computer ip in LiveControl config page

    • mocker

Everything works except I can't get the template to update in TouchOSC. The names keep showing Q2xpcA and stuff like that… Help !

    • ST8

make sure you have the very latest version of the TouchOSC editor. Redownload from hexler.net if needbe.

    • Alex T

I have followed every step. Bonjour recognized my pc and my ipod. the ports are correct, i even synced the template up with my ipod. My last step is that my control surface is set to livecontrol TO. seems like it should work? wrong. no midi imput flash button

    • Alex T

      plz help

    • ST8

do you get the red ring when you select the control surface?

    • mark

what needs setting up in Live's midi pref. to get the keys and drum pads working ????

    • Paul

I can't get my clip names to show either…what did you tinker with?

    • clicked on hexler.net…took me no where 🙁

    • Before I go through all this, owning the apc40…do I really need this app? I'm not being sarcastic btw.

    • just make sure live control see's the ipad in the automatic box. the way it comes up is once you hit done in the ipad setup, it should pop up.

    • Alex

I have followed all of the steps letter by letter, and when i select LiveControl under midi preferences in Ableton, i can see the name of the clips on my iPhone, but Ableton is not receiving any midi. When i tap on the iPhone the green light comes on. There is no red light. Please help! : (

    • Hi, I'm running Windows and have everything else working except for one small thing. I managed to get the drum pads and keyboard working one time, but only after clicking yes to a prompt that was asking me to allow the LiveControl software internet access. I've tried clicking the “Start Router” button again in order to use the pads and keys, but I am no longer getting a prompt from my computer to allow LiveControl access to connect. Is anyone else having this problem, and if so any solutions?

    • ST8

yes a number of users have reported this, i dont think the midi ports are being closed correctly. Try firstly closing the LiveControl app completely and reopening, if that doesnt help try rebooting. its possible the midi ports have been left open by a previous instance of LiveControl. I'm working on fixing this

    • ST8

Using IPs or bonjour names? Try IPs if using Bonjour names, sometimes TouchOSC cant find your bonjour host and so cant send data back to ableton

    • Dan

Brilliant bit of programming on this and think its amazing. does anyone know though if there is a button on it to turn loops on and off ?
and if not how i could add one ?

      thanks for your help

    • ST8

there isnt at the moment, but its not difficult to add. Just have to work out on which template to put it

    • Dan

one other quick question, i seem to have a bug that when the clip names apear (they dont always?) for some reason it only fills the top 4 of the column of 7. the bottom 3 can activate those tracks, but it wont fill them with names. im guessing it has something to do with the red box on ableton only going around the top four clips and this is what moves down when pressing up or down.
any ideas what im doing wrong ?

      thanks guys

    • Dan

ideally it would be most useful on the launcher page, although where is another matter. for me it would be more helpful then the time on the set, but guess some people find that more useful. would it still work if you had it at the bottom in stead of the 7th row of clips ? as you can always scroll down to the next lot ? ill leave it in your more then capable hands
Once again just want to say thanks for this, it really is brilliant !

    • ST8

you've not ticked “using an iPad” in the configuration screen

    • Alex

I have tried both IPs. The iphone seems to be receiving incoming messages( i can see the names of each clip), but when i tap on the iphone, nothing happens on my mac.

    • ST8

Got the correct hostname in TouchOSC? Tap the LiveControl entry in TouchOSC to set the correct host. Also do you have any type of firewall running?

    • Frits

Wonderfull app & great work !
      Much appreciated !
Just wondering how one can save the presets on the XY pads
What do those save & load buttons do ?
      Frits

    • T Conelly

Hi, Ive followed all the steps and checked over all my settings, everything seems to be right but it just wont work? Please help!

    • Elohffa

I'm using ableton live 8.1 in Windows 7 , after the LiveControll installation , I got that error as below , any one Help .!! Any solution ?

File “LiveControl.py”, line 321, in OnOscService
UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'u2019' in position 4: ordinal not in range(128)

    • ST8

Just fixed this, gonna try and push out a new release this weekend

    • Plokhoy

It is loaded win 1.18 instead of win 1.24 ?

    • ST8

not updated the windows installer yet, will try and do that tomorrow!

    • hehe

Everything works fine here except when trying to route I'm getting an error message that “could not bind to router touchosc port 5000” and so TouchOSC doesn't wanna up update with the drum pads page. Any idea what's going wrong? Thanx!

    • Responsible T

after following the above instructions, and choosing start router for the drum pads, i get “ERROR: could not bind to router touchosc port 5000. i'm on mac os 10.6.4, live 8.1.3, using iac driver iac bus 2

    • Philau

Is it possible to have the internet connection coming from the ipod/ipad to a laptop?

    • Mflux

i have exactly the same problem. all my other templates sync just fine. livecontrol always times out. any ideas?

    • dirkdirgler

[SOLVED] I've manage to solve this issue by uploading the template manually via SSH client WinSCP (Windows) or Cyberduck (Mac)…The trick to use these clients is to have a jailbroken iPhone of course. Thanks to ST8's solution you need to rename the “livecontrol.touchosc” to “livecontrol.zip” and extract the content to iPhones TouchOSC directory at the 2 template locations…
Hope that helps everyone having the same problem

    • Marty Mcfly

    • Auch188

Does it make a difference if you use the 2G version of the iPad?

    • Madchiller

Thanks for fixing the links!!! )

    • ST8

      shouldnt do

    • ST8

      fixed

    • ST8

do you have something else running on those ports, osculator maybe?

    • ST8

      just updated the windows installer

    • ST8

it saves the list of devices and their parameters that are currently mapped out to a text file. Then when you reload your live set, hit load and it'll restore all the mapped parameters. Only works for one set at a time though so not sure how useful this is at the moment!

    • Nwills

The Port fields are gone in the LiveControl application. It shows both the local and ipad ip addresses….and everything is working but I cannot configure the router portion of the software. When I select enable router the ips don't default to 4000 they stay at 5000…and I cannot access the port fields anymore????

    • Rhythmhead

Great update! I could never get the drum pads and the keys to work but now they work like a charm. My only gripe is that, the device control page returns the wrong names for the parameters. It use to work but I think something went wrong maybe during the previous update. Otherwise, this things is really amazing. When you fix that I will donate again for sure. Keep up the work because you are change the way I work. Thanks

    • Rhythmhead

Don't know if it helps but I noticed that the labels are returning the wrong names. And the indicator for the control is returning the right info for the parameter it is controlling. So think you just need to fix the labels. Hopefully this makes it easier for you. Thanks again. You Da Man!

    • ST8

you shouldnt need to change the port fields, though if you do hit “advanced settings”

    • ST8

yes ive finally reproduced this bug. fixing now 🙂

    • Rhythmhead

WOW that was quick!!! You are freakin' awesome. Btw love the enhancements to launch page and sequencer page as well as the cue and launch quantize controls. Pretty soon I won't even need to touch my mouse while using Live. Now, just two minor things, is there any way you can have the device page show parameters of devices inside a drum rack. Secondly I like how you added a volume slider to the launch page but do to its size its a little hard to use. I think a track activate button would be slightly more useful. Just my opinion on that last one. Otherwise you have single handedly built the best controller for Live. I am sure you got the guys at Jazzmutant worried 🙂

    • lemesle

      hello,

I downloaded the latest versions, and it does not work.
when I open touchOSC, I add layout. but it displays “connection failed”
      I'm really tried everything

    • 5meohd

if someone could please explain step 1 for me I would be one step closer to coming back from this insanity…. I literally can not open the editor? does touch osc need to be running on my iphone??? wtf… i'm pulling my hair out over here!! I open the editor and nothing comes up.. no window.. nothing!!

      ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    • 5meohd

d/l the editor for the 4th time and it just works… BRILLIANT!!

so it wasn't me or st8.. it was either my mac or for some reason the d/l on last friday was broken!!

      THANKS A BUNCH!!

    • 5meohd

I beleive I just had the same issue. Does anyone know/can recomend the proper procedure for starting the whole setup over again? do I have to follow each step everytime I want to use livecontrol??

    • Pulizziva

Hey whats the difference between the Live Controller and the Live Control Router set-up. The only app that I have is the Live Control Router set-up is this right?

    • I've followed your instructions and everything which I've done looks exactly as your screenshots. My iPod Touch shows up in the Livecontrol installer and all looks once again as the screenshots. However when I start Live (8.1.3) I get no livecontrol_TO listing in the midi control surface list. Any advice much appreciated.

    • ST8

have you gone through the install tab?

    • Yup, did the Browse to Live Directory thing, hit install. Would it make a difference if the Live directory is C:Program files (x86) as it's 64bit W7 system? That's the only thing which I can see which is different to your suggested setup.

    • Got it working. Pretty sure my computer was just being weird. Ran the installer again just now after my PC had been off all night, got the same messages but this time it just worked. Works absolutely great and is giving me a depth of control with live which the keyboard and mouse wasn't. I'll send a wee donation your way for some outstanding work 🙂

    • Henderson

I have followed all of the directions for installation and when i load ableton with touchosc, my ipad recognizes my ableton session and all of the perimeters are preloaded like they say. however, ableton is not recognizing and midi data from my ipad when i touch it. In my midi preferences i am able to select live control however no midi ports show up like they do in the installation pictures. obviously my computer is recognizing my ipad it just isnt receiving any midi.

      Any advice??????

    • Henderson

Also, do i need osculator to be on

    • When ever I try to select the “LiveControl TO” in MIDI preferences, my Ableton Live freezes. I am running 8.1 on Win 7. In order to see LiveControl in my MIDI list I had to install it to a temp directory and then move the files to the Ableton program director. Any advice would be appreciated… can't wait to use this!

    • did you ever find a solution to the freezing issue when selecting LiveControl_TO from the Ableton list?

    • did you ever find a solution to the freezing issue when selecting LiveControl_TO from the Ableton list?

    • I had problems with Windows firewall. see my comment here (July 2, 2010 / 12pm):
      http://hexler.net/to-infinity-and-beyond
I also had to allow ports 5000 and 5001 to UDP traffic otherwise I got no communication between TouchOSC and LiveControl.

    • Schrodinger

I've followed everything in the installation files, i'm running ableton live 8.1.1 a REAL copy, when i go to select LiveControl from the midi control surface list live just freezes, im running windows vista 32 with ports 5000,5001 all open what is going wrong!? Please help me…

    • On Windows XP, Live 8.1 I've got it working (without router) by opening ports 5000, 5001, but it's really slow to react, even to mouse actions, any idea why? Also I can't get the router part to work yet, even with Windows firewall disabled. I'm not using midiOx, I have something called IPMidi which should do the same job.

    • ST8

Select “Use IP adresses instead of bonjour names” and then reselect your ipod/ipad from the automatic configuration tab. Seems to be issues resolving the bonjour names on some windows installations. Maybe windows firewall is blocking bonjour?

    • ST8

If you're not receiving any data from TouchOSC to ableton then either, the hostname selected in TouchOSC is wrong, or you have a firewall running which is blocking incoming traffic.

You dont need any midi ports unless you want to us the keys/drums page. Most of the scripts talks directly to ableton and does not need midi to functions.

    • ST8

Ahh hadnt thought that windows firewall was blocking the TouchOSC editor. Cheers for that!

    • ST8

Sounds like the same issue as other people, the bonjour hostnames aren't being resolve. Selec “Use IP Addresses instead of hostnames” and reselect your device from the automatic configuration list

    • ST8

you can try using ip addresses instead of hostnames.
can you also try upgrading to 8.1.3? there were some issues on 8.1 i think

    • Thanks, I'll try upgrading if you think that'll make it more reactive. Do you think the bonjour hostnames are also something to do with it being slow? Other news, I got the router working with loopbe1 a free thing like MidiOx but much simpler http://nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html
Thanks again for a great product, Phil

    • Schrodinger

nope 'fraid thats not helped :S

    • Schrodinger

Keep getting an error message, could not bind to port?

    • Tristan

Is it possible to integrate a crossfader for djing?

    • Works like a charm on my MacBook and with an iPad.
      Thanks for that, great work!

    • i have one, and i'm considering selling it. for real.

    • Badbib

Works like a charm, I'll try setting up a ad hoc server as there seems to be some slow reactions on my iPod touch (not constant latency, more like occasional dropouts)

but yeah, I solved the freeze issue with IP instead of bonjour names, that worked for me as well.

thanks so much for that, it's insane to have so much control for this price.

    • Miguelito

Cant get Router/Midi to work. When i enable router, it breaks my touchosc config. I'm using Live 8.1, MBP 13 + iPad.

    • Synesthesia

It was working perfectly, and then i lost the communication from live to the ipad. Tried to change ports, no change. my firewall is off, i am just so sad : it was so great when it worked !

    • Geocline

hey there, love this app! so looking forward to getting it up and running correctly. I can do everything just fine except when it comes to the router. I have followed the instructions exactly, and my settings appear to be the same that you have in the instructions. Again, everything works but the pads and keys. Then, when I am on the router page, i save configuration and then start router, I too get the “ERROR: Could not bind to router touchosc port 5000”. I have nothing else running that I am aware of. I dont use osculator so thats not it. Any ideas? Also, where is the donate button for this app?

    • jason

So when I reach the point when I'm supposed to go to the install tab in LiveControl and Browse to find the Live Directory, The Live Icon under the list of applications is greyed out and I can't choose it to install, any suggestions

    • Thanks! I am now using IP addresses instead of the bonjour names and all works perfectly.

    • It needs to be pointed to the application folder which should be at “C:Program FilesAbletonLive 8.1”. If it runs successfully you will see a “LiveControl_TO” folder in the following location “C:Program FilesAbletonLive 8.1ResourcesMIDI Remote Scripts”. If you do not see this folder, you can manually create it, then “install” LiveControl to a temp folder and move the files from there.

    • Adam

Does not appear to be working on a PowerBook G4 either.

    • Oleh

I got the exact same problem. 64 bit W7, won't show up in control surface list. Tried restarting, leaving it off, and all that.

On my 32 bit XP it shows up, and the touch recieves information from Live, but won't send any. I get the error which states something like can't lock on to ports. Also, the only thing that seems to transfer information from Live is the master fader, when I move it on the computer, it moves on the touch. Nothing else does.

The ports are open, firewires are open, I'm using ip instead of bonjour names, and I've tried anything I could find here. I promise a small donation when my grant arrives, if this could be solved…

    • Oleh

Okey, so now I solved the Win 7, the problem was that darned administrator thing, when I manually copied the control surface folder from the installer and into the live directory everything started working. Guess that's the problem, have to run the installer as admin.

    • Me

I'm having the same exact problem – I'm able to use everything but the drums and keys.

Anytime I press the “c3” in drums I see the yellow midi note activation thing in Ableton Live but it's not hitting the drum instrument.

      Anyone know what's going on?

    • ST8

This is really weird, i have the same problem. Its something to do with the midi port getting stuck open or something. Ive found the only way to fix it is to reboot. Still dont know whats causing this 🙁

    • Luke

Hi, Great App – very much looking forward to getting this going.
Have followed the instructions about 10 times and still keep getting the 'could not bind' error.
Any ideas? – I'm using an iPad with Output port 5000, Input 5001. 10.6.4, ableton 8.1.4 on a macbook pro. Also using IP addresses instead of bonjour names.
      Thanks !

    • Luke again

OK… I restarted the midi router in Livecontrol and now I'm binding ! The next problem is that the ipad doesn't seem to be receiving information from Live – ie no clip names or device data etc…
Would much appreciate some help !
      Cheers…

    • Jason

Yes. That would be super helpful for me too…

    • i cant sync the live control preset to my ipod . presets i create myself upload fine but this one will not no matter what i do ….. any ideas?

    • Spahiushpetim

hallo, bin ICH HABE IPAD und ich nich Krige Laufen Unter Win Vista danke!

    • Frantisek

Hi, I'm a little desperate here. I installed LiveControl yesterday and after some time I made it fully work. I could trigger the drum pads and play the keys and I was so amazed. However, when I launched it today, the drums and keys stopped to work even though they get the notes from Ableton and Ableton seems to receive the signal as a yellow dot appears in the top right corner every time I press a drum or a key. Any idea how to fix this one? Would be really glad to make it work again, it was hillarious…

    • Djyaroslove

guys, i have the problem, when I hit sync on laptop and trying to connect it it IPAD shows me – Conection failed, Timed out..

      what should I do ?

    • Steve Mckenna

Hi great program, having some real fun with it.. got a little problem the text does not appear in the i pad. any ideas would be great

    • Steve Mckenna

sorted changed the receive port to 9000 for some reason 5001 wasnt sending back to the i pad

    • Richard Soup

Everything seems to work – clips, volume etc – but for some reason mute, solo and arm don't. Any ideas. On the setup the IAC driver (touchosc) and (livecontrol in) and (livecontrol out) are not showing in Ableton.

      Any ideas greatfully recieved

    • tboz

      THIS IS AMAZING. THANK YOU!

    • Alexander

      hi,
first of all thanks for this amazing program! completely changed the way i work with live.
but i think you should amend the installation instructions since it can´t really be installed under a default installation of windows 7.
it requiers admin privileges to write to the folder it installs the midi extension to and without admin privileges it just fails silently (still giving you the “installation successful” message) and doesn´t write any files.
furthermore you can´t run the .bat file as admin because then it doesn´t find the .exe for some reason.
so the only way for me to install on windows 7 was so “install” to my desktop and then copy the installed files over.. after that it worked flawelessly

    • Pierreguigue

      Thank you so much ST8

I tried the new version and it does not work, in Ableton I can read: “Error Could not bind to incoming ip/port. Check your LiveControl network settings”.

I tried both in Wifi and ad-hoc network and using the default port 5001 as in your tutorial but it does not want to work.

Thanks again for your hard work

    • Mick

      Hi,

I add my thanks to the others here, very well done!
Have just updated to new version on mac 10.6.4
      Live 8.1.3
      TouchOSC 1.6
      Live control 131

I see the oddest thing on the Clip Launcher page
As I press a clip say on track 1, they play the wrong track / clip????
So press clip 1 track 1 it plays clip 1 track 1
Press clip 2 track 1 it plays track 2 clip 2
Press clip 3 track 1 it plays track 3 clip 3
Also the clip names don't appear

On the mixer the Mute and solo buttons are mixer up but the volume sliders are correct
Also the drum pads and keyboard pages are fine.

      Any idea what is wrong?

      The keyboard and

    • pierre

      IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!!

Thank you so much again for all of your hard work on this project!

    • ST8

are you using the very latest version of TouchOSC? Sounds like its not announcing your device type properly. Make sure you've got 1.6 installed.

    • ST8

Sounds like the installer has not overwritten you old LiveControl files. When you run LiveControl Installer.jar make sure the path is something like
      /Applications/Live x.x.x and not /Applications/Live x.x.x/Live x.x.x
seems to append an extra path sometimes

    • ST8

the new installer automatically asks for admin privileges.

    • KAR

No LiveControl_TO in my control surface drop-down. MIDI input works for the keys and drum pads, but I can’t get the red box to show up or have any control of the session, etc. Please help!!!
      MAC OSX 10.6.3 – Live 8.1.5

    • David

Same problem here. I updated live to 8.1.5 but live control does not appear on the list of controlers.
      Great program!
      Thanks in advance

      MAC OSX 10.6.4
      Live 8.1.5

    • pushtobreak

Thanks so much for this great set up! Working almost perfectly….after spending a little time rechecking everything I seem to have things straight but, I am having the same problem: no drum pads or keys working. I too, am seeing the yellow indicator light in Live’s upper right. Am I missing something obvious? The only other issues I have is what appears to be the crossfader on the Launcher page doesn’t work and I don’t understand how the xy lock buttons and xy load/save work. Totally loving this, it would be great to get the pads and keys going too!

    • terse

I just upgraded to LiveControl 2.0 and Live 8.1.5. I can’t seem to get Live to send any information to LiveControl. The drums and keys work fine in LiveControl, but not much else does. The cue rotary control works, and the master volume works, only it controls pan instead of volume.

Everything was working fine on the previous versions of everything, so not sure what’s going on.

    • pushtobreak

It never fails…as soon as I post after seemingly trying everything I immediately realize I’m doing something really stupid!…like not having the device track in input!!! The other two issues do still stand though maybe I’m missing something obvious there too! Thanks again for this…it is superb!

    • Yo Lei

It happened to me too, did you solve this problem?

    • elsee

I was originally having the same problems as you: Only keys and drums working, nothing else. Open up your Live package, then remove all the scripts currently in /Contents/App-Resources/MIDI Remote Scripts/LiveControl_TO. Reinstall and everything should work fine.

    • Enil Noenis

Not had a chance to run a full regression test of features, but my initial reaction is “WOW!!!” You guys have saved me months of frustration and an unneccessary learning curve. Time for me to just get on with the music! Install instructions work perfectly. Thanks to all the developers. Keep up the good work!

    • terse

yep, this fixed it. don’t know why I didn’t think of it! thanks!

    • F’nHack

I installed everything, but LiveControl_TO doesn’t come up in Midi Prefrences

    • F’nHack

      Got it working, scratch that

    • Merlish

How? I’m having the same issue. Thanks!

      Hi ST8,

Running LiveControl on an iPad to Ableton 8.1 Suite in OSX 10.5.8 on a MBP.

I downloaded the live controller MIDI script but once installed the “Live.app” is grey and covered by a white circle with a line through it.

When I click on it a dialogue box opens and says; “You can’t open the application “Live” because it is not supported on this architecture.”

I can view package contents and can clearly see the LiveControl_TO file within but it is not coming up in Ableton’s MIDI preferences, presumably because the live app is not running or being recognised.

Do I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard to run the software?

Thanks for all your hard work on the app, love the look and feel, itching to get it all working.

      sb

    • I have 2 questions

How can record a clip in to slot ?
How can I control crossfader on master channel ?

    • aa

i’m having the same issue. i’m also running suit 8.1 in OSX 10.5.8 mac book pro

      Hi ST8
You made me buying an IPad.
I enjoy playing a lot, great work . But after ten minutes I lose connection and I don´t receive no more signal the green light is still on and I can still launch but no more info is send to the pad.
When I switch my pad off/ on it works again but only for ten minutes.

      Questions:
Do I have to start live control every time ?
Why isn’t it possible to save in live control?
      What can I do?
Is it a problem with my Network ?

      Live 8.15
      Live Control .
      Thanks

got a win 7 system and i´ve done the things as described.
i don´t understadn the meaning of the touter in livecontrol in cunjunction with midi yoke.
which ports do i have to forward ? they should be different to the regular ones (5000 and 5001). I´ve tryed 9000 and 9001 but it didn´t work … pls , need some help 😉
sick of playing the drums via keyboard ….

    • Shek

      adition:
on the ipad, i do specify the “regular” ports of touchosc – means the function of the mixer, device, sequencer … ? or iss there no need to specify this ports ?
is that port the one for the pads and keys ?

      i’m on a mac

    • Djclass1

I have the same problem, how did you get it working? one both my computers.. 🙁

    • Simulcast

I am soooo close to getting this working…but something is broken. Live Control is receiving everything fine, it just cant send any data. When I launch a clip on the computer it plays on the phone, but when I try to play it from the phone nothing happens. I’ve got the red rectangle and one-way communication…I just need 2-way!
      I’m on OSX 10.6 with Live 8.1.5…
I’m using ports 5000 and 5001…is there something else I need to be doing?
      Cheers for the awesome work.

    • Polimorfos

Yes. Please share how you got it to work!

    • Wim_xsyst

      Same problem here.

      Problem solved…………
Ive got fully deleted ableton live and istalled it again then installed livecontrol and everything works fine 😉

    • Simulcast

Did you delete your whole Live library or just the application bit?

hey man i feel like i cheated on you . i went out and got touch-able. i had all sort of problems with it…. could get it run worth a damn….. come back, and there is a dope ass new update. LONG LIVE LIVECONTROL! install is as easy as pie… clip launcher is bad-ass (clips behave correctly in repeat mode, oh thank you thank you thank you) and i love the new colors. easy on the eyes 🙂 also you perfected the router with drums&keys. top notch stuff.

just one or two little things,
in the sequencer…. am i missing something? or is there a way to navigate from clip to clip on the sequencer page. i can use the mouse but, on previous versions you did have that feature.
and one last thing…. it would be, ability to change the loop length of a clip. and thats it. perfect.
STILL THE BEST CONTROLLER APP FOR ABLETON!!!
Keep it up and thank you

    • Anonymous

Shift then press a clip on the clip launcher will select it, that’ll then show in the sequencer.

    • Jeanmi

      quite impressive dude 😮

i’m quite ashamed to ask you about a problem when i see all you’ve done for free.. 😀
I just cant make the “up , down, left, right ” buttons go right.
It desyncs my TouchOSC and my macbook, and i’ve to reload my set to get it working again 🙁

    • Mod And Op

      having problems with the download.

How can I edit or make my own template from the livecontrol template to just have pages with sliders that communicate back and forth from live?

    • Rishabh

      Hi,
I noticed that in device mode the knobs don’t seem to move smoothly, they seem to move it really large steps. So if I have an auto filter on a track, the knob for frequency moves in really large step thus not giving the ideal continuous control feel.
Am I doing something wrong? Everything else seems to work perfect.

      BTW excellent app

    • Dinoil

      Hi ST8,
I have probs with the last two versions (Windows). I get revision 130 to run.
Using Win XP, Ableton 8.15. When installing 132 I don’t get signals from Ableton, only my device (IPodTouch) send signals. In LiveControl all fields are empty. There is also a conflict between apc40 and LiveControl_TO. When using unistall the folders where live is installed will be deleted.
Where can I find the IP adress for pc and device? Is There a config file?
      Thanks for your ear.

      Dinoil

    • K. Wild

I got the same problem (windows).Ableton receive midi from iPad (cursors and buttons on Live worx correctly) but Live don’t send darta to iPad (so all fields are empty and of course no VU meters movement,etc.).I don’t know about apc40 coz i don’t know nothing about it!

    • K. Wild

Nothing to do!On my win 7 x64 LiveControl still don’t work!I can send midi only from the ipad to Live but Live don’t send data to iPad.All fields are still empty and VU meters too.
My iPad is correctly seen in the LiveControl application (i can select it in Connected Device).I remember that an older version of LiveControl worx some weeks ago,but after installing that new…no more working!

    • Josuepalma

      Hi ST8

Tnx for liveControl!!, i used all the time on my iphone.. just a suggestion 🙂
it would be awesome if i could set the midi channels for pads and keys on the LiveControl.exe, you know, to play different things on each one.
      Thanks man!

    • ERRATA CORRIGE:
1 – Run “Install LiveControl.rar”, this will install the MIDI Remote Script into your Ableton Live Directory. When prompted selected your Ableton Directory in the format Live x.x.x

Is not “Install LiveControl.rar” but “Install LiveControl.JAR”.

I think that is the same for Windows and Mac…

    • pushtobreak

Thanks ST8..LiveControl is great. Everything’s working but I can’t seem to figure out the ‘load/save’ function on the x/y page. Am I missing something stupid?

    • pushtobreak

Okay, never fails as soon as I ask a question I figure out something…in this case the new version which doesn’t seem to have the save/load in the x/y page….never mind….

    • Dinedal

Hi, I fixed this by opening the following ports in Windows Firewall: 4000,4001,5000,5001.

Or you can disable the firewall.

    • K. Wild

You need full iTunes installation on win7 x64,installing only the bonjour service don’t work on my system.

i got the same problem … the drumpads and keyboad-pads dont work either on my windows 7 system … any ideas ?

    • Jacky

After installing midi yoke, when i tried to run LiveControl.exe. It cannot detect my Iphone Touch.
Does anyone face the same problem or does anyone has a solution/ guidance to it?

      Thanks in advance.

    • Snowdrummer

Can’t get this to work im running Osx 10.6.4, ableton 8.1.3 and using python 2.6. Is there any livecontrol update that works with python 2.6

    • Anonymous

Thats unlikely to be a python problem since LiveControl does not depend on the version of python installed on your system but the one compiled into your version of Live.

What error messages are you getting?

    • Anonymous

Make sure you’ve got iTunes / Bonjour installed

    • Anonymous

They should be on midi channel 1 and 2

    • Snowdrummer

the error that comes up says to check port/ip settings and they are all hooked up right the ipad is able to receive the templates fine and sometimes i can get the keyboard function to work but thats about it

    • It just worked fine today for me. Did you download LiveOsc? That seems to help. You also don;t need to install anything other than the two installs from the site here. Live Control software has to be running. Try syncing to the Editor software first, then try and sync it with livecontrol app after. Thats how mine first kicked on. Joseph@switchedonaustin.com

    • Bananenbar

      Hi St8,

I followed all the installation path, running it on Live 8.1.3. What happens is that Touchosc receives midi from ableton (if I move knobs on ableton they move on touchosc) but touchosc does not send midi to ableton. So if I touch any control on the touchosc it doesn’t make anything on ableton. Tried different configuration but could not get it to work. Any chance to get this sorted?

    • I got an ipad 2 as company gift yesterday and I installed touch osc and livecontrol just now! <3 <3 <3 🙂

      Hi,

Thanks for this. I got everything working. Problem I have is I get a big black square inside the template once everything is connected. So half the screen is blacked out. Very strange, as I can launch clips where from the part of the screen that is visible.

      Hi St8

I have a problem (think so)..
I did everything you said here, but the keys on my ipad can’t play the sounds on Ableton, is there a problem? (it happens with Drums osc too)
I used Touchosc_bridge as midi driver, cause the other one you advice download (Midi Yoke) got me many problems about connection, and I could make it work just one time. Is here a problem?

I use win 7 x64, and the other things work VERY WELL! Thanks for helping!

(If someone else knows the answer, please tell me!!)

      Thanks!

      hey fellows,
ok this works perfectly on my iphone if i build up a completely new set
BUT if I load a excising one, nothing is happening on ableton if I touch anything on my livecontrol on my iphone 🙁
      what have I done wrong?

    • Thomas Habersohn

i had the same problem -> look if you have hexlers touchOSC Bridge installed -> deinstall it -> this solution worked fine for me.

it seems that there was a port misscommunication between liveControl and the TouchOSC Bridge. After removal of the Bridge the ports in TouchOSC App updated correctly to 5000/5001 and everything exept the keys/pads and the sequencer worked out of the box

    • ST8

Yes im afraid livecontrol doesnt work with the TouchOSC bridge.

    • Frustrated..

It would be nice if this was explained in PC Version as well…….
      Instructions in PC is horrible…

    • youngcircle

I love LiveControl, so so simple and it just works and the sequencer is especially awesome, once you figure out the magical “giddy-up!” command (menu 2 and up/down). Love the two-way communication, but there’s just one little problem…haha I’m kidding no problems. That’s why I’m writing this note of thanks, I hate so many things in this vain, love-starved world, but LiveControl ain’t one of them! That’s a dub negative which means thanks for your great template.

Just a small tip to anyone who’s having a problem installing MIDI Yoke on windows 7 like I did, and therefore couldn’t use the keys/drums:
When I tried to install MIDI Yoke it got always stuck in the middle saying it got interrupted. What I did to solve this was to run the installation as an administrator. But it wasn’t that easy because the file is a .msi installation file, so I had to run it as an administrator from the command line. To do so you should find the command line tool from the start menu, then right-click, and run as administrator. Then from the command line run your file with “msiexec /i MidiYokeSetup.msi” from the folder your file was downloaded to.
      Hope I’ve helped.
      Enjoy.

       Same here.

Latest download finally worked with Live 8.3 but I cant find any templates for the TouchOSC editor anywhere!

I am hoping that within the editor template there is a way set up adjust tempo and delete clip.

    • MMH_ finally it worked!

Had the same problem. After checking that LiveControl_TO was in the right folder: Ableton->Contents->App-resources->MIDI Remote Scripts, I just restarted Live and suddenly I was able to choose LiveControl TO. Now it works!
      Good luck

    • Flclien

I need a 32 bit version installer as well, or maybe just the midi remote script to place manually in the app folder?

    • Flclien

To everyone on Mac OSX having the “LiveControl Installer” is not supported on this architecture problem, here’s how I was able to manually install the LiveControl_TO remote midi scripts:

Right click the LiveControl Installer file and click “Show Package Contents”

In this folder, navigate to Contents –> Resources, and copy LiveControl_TO.zip to your desktop.

Unzip the file, and you’ll see a newly created LiveControl_TO folder filled with .py files.

Go to your Applications folder –> Live x.x.x (or wherever your ableton live folder is)

Right click on the Live application icon, and again, click “Show Package Contents”

Navigate to Contents –> App-Resources –> MIDI Remote Scripts, and place the LiveControl_TO folder that we unzipped earlier into the MIDI Remote Scripts folder.

Make sure you correctly followed all other installation steps, and be sure to restart ableton as well.  Hope this helps!

      Cheers~

    • Hi, does this work with Live 8.3? There is no longer a folder Live x.x.x, only Ableton Live 8.app directly within Applications. This will presumably mean the Live Control.jar will have to be installed differently?

    • Woolsey Travis

I don’t see LiveControl_TO.zip in the resources folder after following these steps. What am I doing wrong?

    • Henry

Hi when I open the touch OSC editor these options aren’t under live control? Where do I find them?Open the LiveControl template for TouchOSC (either LiveControl.touchosc or LiveControl_iPad.touchosc) in the TouchOSC editor.

    • Moyanoa

I have the last version of touchosc editor and i don´t see the template, is very difficult to leave the template in the .zip? My god…

    • For windows users, make sure you are placing the LiveControl_TO in the correct folder. I found it in the Ableton folder via Program Files, but couldn’t figure out why LiveControl_TO wasn’t appearing in the control surface list.

Enable showing of the hidden folders and go to Program Data>Ableton>Live 8>Resources>MIDI Remote Scripts and then paste the LiveControl_TO folder here. Restart Ableton and then chose LiveControl_TO from the drop down.

If you are having probs with finding the LiveControl_TO option read this:

MAKE SURE you have DELETED any previous version of live…for some reason – even when you point to your new install of live in the Livecontrol installer, it installs the files, but they never show up.

As soon as i deleted my old version of live, it popped up.

This could also be that the shortcut i was using never updated to run the new Live version and just kept loading 8.2 instead of 8.3 (the one i was installing the lineControl to)

      Hope that helps.

    • alex

I’m having the same problem with knobs both with LiveControl and TouchAble (also OSC-based). Don’t know what to do, this issue ruins all the plans on using this in other ways awesome way of controlling.

    • I bet $50 that he just didn’t have osc enabled in the app itself. I was so used to using midi bridge that I almost made the same mistake. For anyone not seeing the device in Live Control MAKE SURE you have the iOS device with OSC connections enabled, CoreMidi Enabled, and the other two (Midi Bridge and mobilzer) disabled!

    • Justin, did you triple check to make sure you have OSC enabled in Connections? I almost made that mistake. OSC should be enabled, Midi Bridge disabled, Midi Mobilizer disabled, and core midi enabled. THEN you need to make sure both devices are properly connected to an Ad Hoc network or other network.

    • Maybe. Some templates use OSC messages and some use Midi. If you are using Midi Bridge the messages ONLY accept midi from templates. If your template is sending OSC messages then Midi Bridge WON’T SEE those message.
I’d bet it’s a conflict between the type of messages you want to send and the app receiving it… Try changing the types of messages the templates you are making send 🙂

Is it just me or is the Mac installer/ app not working?

    • Michael

      Hello,

I have everything working so that the iPhone or iPad can control Ableton Live Lite with TouchOSC. However, moving knobs on Ableton Live on the PC does not change the display on the iPhone or iPad. Also, the slots are not filled in with file names / colors, etc.

I have the ports set on TouchOSC to 5000/5001.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks.

    • tlr

Drum pads and keyboard are dead. They were working fine yesterday… no idea why they aren’t working now, didn’t change anything. Using a macbook.

    • Vonkoba

I am on Windows7 (Ableton 8.2.2) but no matter what I do I
can never find anything under the “connected device” tab of LiveControl. I did
install the MidiYoke and the “touchosc-bridge” program, and they both appear
under the “midi port” tab. Still, no matter what midi port I choose, the “connected
      device” tab remains empty.

Under the “host” section of TouchOSC I added my i.p. as explained on the TouchOSC website (that is,
I found it by going to command prompt and typing ipconfig.

Any help is greatly appreciated of course, as it is
frustrating to spend all this time trying to figure this out instead of making
      music! J

OSX 10.7.5, Live 8.3.4. Template updates ok on the ipad to show current settings on Live, and control changes made on Live update on the iPad, BUT moving controls on the iPad doesn’t do anything in Live. Can see a couple of others reporting this in the comments, but no solution… any ideas?

    • I was having the issue that many have reported, with the iPad being able to control Live but no labels or control changes being received by the iPad from Live. The cause was cached network settings on the iPad that were no longer valid, namely an IP address that functioned on my network but was unreachable by the host machine. The fix was to reset the network settings on the iPad. Just renewing the IP address is not enough, it will not flush bad IP information completely. You will have to reenter any wireless connection information you had stored. OH MAN… this is the best thing I’ve used since I bought my first copy of Live. Awesome work, ST8!

    • I should mention that my configurations are textbook installs following the above instructions. My Windows machine is 64 bit Windows 7, LiveControl, MIDIYoke, TouchOSC Bridge, Live 8.3.4. My Mac is OS X Mountain Lion, LiveControl, TouchOSC Bridge, Live 8.3.4.

    • Had the same problem. Solved it checking firewall settings and making sure the LiveControl application is allowed to send and receive in the local network. if you are using other than the Windows firewall, make sure UDP incoming/outgoing traffic is allowed for LiveControl

    • I have managed to establish a TouchOSC to Live conncetion, so I can launch clips, manipulate controls and move the selection ring. But the return channel doesn’t work. Clips won’t appear in TouchOSC and if I move controls via the mouse, this does not affest the IPad. I use Win7x64, Live Suite 8.3.4, Max4Live on Max6. I can see in my Firewall-Protocol, that UDP messages are sent from port 60799 on the iPad to port 5000 on my PC. But nothing is sent to 5001.

The Max Runtime Log Window shows two “unable to resolve host iPad-von-Wound.local..” messages each time I enable TouchOSC. Bonjour is installed.

      What am I missing here?

    • Ryan

anyone getting a ‘bind to port 5000 unsuccessful’ error? You’d see it in the max window for the live control os x app. Using 10.6.8, live 8.3.4. I’ve used live control for a while now but never had this problem. Changes in live will reflect in live control on ipad, but live control will not send data to live itself.

    • is it possible to do this over the 30 pin connector?
ios 6 introduced midi core over the 30 pin (lightning) so is that at all possible?
im a college student, and the school network prevents computer to computer connections of any type (including this)

    • ST8

LiveControl works over OSC, which is why neither the bridge nor, the 30 pin connector will work with it, sorry

    • ST8

Another program is already bound to that port, lsof -i -P in a terminal will tell you what it is…

    • Ryan

and it was audio midi setup using port 5000. I’m a dumbass

    • wesley

Followed the instructions, still not working, Ableton doesn’t sense any MIDI activity at all. I used Core MIDI, setup the network, added the device, and installed LiveControl. In Ableton prefs I selected LiveControl and Network (Wesley), both devices are on the same WiFi network, yet no signal is passing from the iPHone to Ableton. What gives?

    • torvez

I got it set up exactly like this, except im on a pc using “loopbe1” instead of midi yoke. it says control surface 1 ready to use, but the red box never shows up. and i cant control anything… what can i do?

    • ST8

You need to use the osc output in TouchOSC, LiveControl does not support midi!

    • isa

Is this working with windows 7 64bit ?i did everything you said but it didn’t work (tried touchosc bridge, midi york ) . livecontrol shows my phone name and phone shows the ip but no signal in ableton .. thanks

    • Erdem

Haven’t solve sync problem for straight 7 hours of research!

      I’ve done all the instructions in the latest download of live control package below;

“Upload the TouchOSC template to your iPad/iPod using the TouchOSC editor avaiable from

      http://hexler.net/software/touchosc

Open the correct template for your device in the editor, then click Sync. Open up TouchOSC

on your device and click Layout, then Add, then select your computer. The template should

      sync to your device.

Install the MIDI Remote Script by double clicking “LiveControl Installer.jar” and select your Live

application directory when prompted. Then copy the LiveControl app to your Applications folder.

Start LiveControl and select a midi output port for the drum pads / keys. In TouchOSC got Network,

select LiveControl from the list of Found Hosts, this will configure the host and outgoing ports.

Set the incoming port to 5001 if it isnt by default. Click back, then done, and the template should

load. Your iPad/iPod should appear in LiveControl.

Now start Ableton Live. Goto Preferences, then MIDI Preferences, select LiveControl_TO from

the list of MIDI Remote Surfaces. If everything has worked the red selection ring should

appear and your iPad/iPod should sync with the Live set”

also did the hints on youtube videos like choosing only midi in and out in table control software (which doesn’t mentioned in the package intallation text),
so in the end I saw the red box in ableton midi settings, but I cant see any midi input signals at all! Please help me!

      my configuration: MBP core2duo, 10.6.8, ableton live 8.3.3, ipad_6.1.2

    • Paul

Just downloaded the installer, but in both the Mac and Windows zips the template is missing. I’m stuck. Please help! Anybody has the the file for download available?

    • vaikl

Both templates (for Pad and for Phone/Pod) are now part of the standard template set for TouchOSC. You can download “touchosc-default-layouts.zip” at http://hexler.net/software/touchosc.

    • nicoz

it work with specific ports on the idevice (configure it in touchOSC>OSCsetup) :
      out port = 5000
      in port = 9000
      … it works for me…

    • why is this so difficult? the fact that this is so hard to connect, makes it a waste of my money

    • when i select livecontrol to in the remote script section in live, the red box is not as big as its supposed to be, and i cant control anything. it looks like its thinking i have an iphone, but i have an ipad. please help

    • my red box is not as big as it is on my ipad, and only some pads work. why is this so difficult? using live 9

    • gkmachine

Hi, I’d really like to use this software (in fact I did use it on Ableton 8 on another computer briefly) but am having serious difficulty getting it onto my new machines with Ableton 9. I see that the video has a different approach to what’s in the installer folder. Which is most up-to-date? Which procedure is best to follow? I have tried to install twice and then uninstalled everything I’ve downloaded to be safe so I could start again. I get recognised devices but nothing in the Touch OSC Editor. If I try to open the TouchOSCiPad.touchosc layout in the Editor nothing happens. I’ve been to hexler and here to re-download all files but nothing’s happening. I’m finally beginning to unravel and go insane.

    • daniel

I cannot find the livecontrol.jar file when setting up the istallation. I’m installing the latest version of live control. Pease help!

    • the installer automatically does this now.

    • tanner

      my keyboard dose not work

    • Marshall

Hi, I recently went through each step of the install again as I’ve upgraded to Live 9 and wanted to be sure all elements were up to date. I’m having the same problem as I’d previously had which is that the drums and keys pads are showing no signs of control in Ableton. The right hand panel of each of these tabs is having the desired effect, I just cant actually get any sounds from either tab. I’m hoping its a simple fix or I’ve just missed something obvious but everything I’ve tried so far is getting me nowhere.

    • Jareboomafoo

The dmg that I just downloaded appeared to be corrupted, because finder gave me a warning when I tried to mount it on my desktop, but I clicked proceed and it worked.

My question is how do I get the pads and keyboard to actually play notes on my devices in ableton? All I hear is a mystery piano sound when I play them. And I don’t even have a piano device in my live set!

    • coolout

Just installed touchOSC 1.9 on a Nexus 7 (Android…yay!) and things seem to be working OK, but for some reason the livecontrol ipad template only displays 4×8 instead of 8×8 (including live’s green focus box). I can trigger the other scenes in touchOSC they’re just not labeled. Any solutions?

    • jeshu

you should add [Ipad] to ZeroConf Name, in osc settings.

    • jeshu

greetings. please, help me. i’m loosing my mind with this issue. here we have 2 computers, pc & laptop, both with ableton, livecontrol, disabled firewalls and the same wifi lan. everything works fine in the pc but in the laptop livecontrol can not detect any midi signal from pads an keys, but everything else works fine. my tablet is a tf-101.
also I tried midiloop and midiyoke. what could i have done wrong?

    • Jerry Boosh

Hey Geniuses – how about you you make a version now thats compatible with Ableton Live 9 Suite – i want my 4.99 back, i knew i shoulda bought a philly cheesesteak instead…

    • Thyan

      Hi,

I have the same problem as “Coolout”. Focus ring is the size of Iphone (4×8) not the Ipad (8×8). I have a large ACER Android tablet. Furthermore, there is some kind of offset on the launch-button ( [tracks, Scene] : lines are respected [1,1] on tablet = [1,1] on live & [1,2] on tablet = [1,2] on live. However clip launch is going diagonal when i follow column (scene) direction by clicking down [1,2] on the tablet = [2,2] on live , [1,3] on the tablet = [3,3] on live). Only the Iphone template works correctly. I tried : “you should add [Ipad] to ZeroConf Name, in osc settings” with no luck. It is a great peace of software, however with this problem, not really usable on Ipad template. Any solution around?

      Thanks for help,

    • Thyan

      Hello,

Problem solved: should add [iPad] to ZeroConf Name. That is true! but with starting the different application in the good order otherwise the iphone template comes by default.

1 – Add [iPad] to ZeroConf Name
      2 – Start livecontrol
3 – Register to livecontrol in the touchosc configuration menu
      4 – load the template
      5 – start live

I was loading the template afterwards therefore my device was listed after Live startup in Livecontrol and Iphone focus zone was coming up.

I have problem with the iPad template. The launcher tab is messed up as you can see in the screenshot below.
      http://ubuntuone.com/7QbDjwLlpXzMj01UiB4ge7
Here is the setup in Ableton:
      http://ubuntuone.com/50b1jMFcJjiOGdoObLKHg1

      Environment:

      Host:
      OS: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit
      Touch OSC Bridge 1.2
      Live Control 1.0.1
      Ableton 9.0.3

      Controller:
Asus Transformer Pad T300 Android 4.2.1
      Touch OSC 1.9.1

Is it a bug or I missed something?

      Some thoughts for PC users:

I finally got this working but there are a few things that I had to dig for that weren’t apparent to me when I started.

      1. The Live Control template is located in the touchosc-editor-1.6.0-win32.zip file. I have since seen (somewhere) where it said this but it took me a while to find.

      2. You will need to install the touchosc bridge from the hexler website. This differs from the mac installation video in that the bridge will be your midi in/out in Live’s preferences. It will also need to be selected as your midi port in the LiveControl window on your PC.

      3. I had to install 32 and 64 bit java on my machine in order to install Live Control. You will have to look on Java’s website for the appropriate installer, as Java will detect the one that it thinks you need.

Other than that, the tutorial video helped me to get this thing up and running. Without it, I may not have been able to do it.

      TrendMicro-HouseCall says that LiveControl 1.0.1 Setup.exe contain trojan/virus

      TROJ_GEN.F47V0510

Why do I only have the jzml file of live control on my desktop and not an exe? I’m on Windows 7 and I’m about to lose my mind!

    • fernando

did you got this resolved ? please tel me how 😉

    • Nikhil Jigjinni

    • Ed

The downloads on the right seem to be corrupted .zip files now. Any chance of getting these working again? Thanks

    • Tim

Hey Ed, I was having the same problem. The Mac zip is definitely corrupt. But if you browse the source files in the SVN you can find old versions of the download. I found version 1.01 that worked for me. Download it here: http://monome.q3f.org/export/140/trunk/LiveControl_TO/setup_src/dist/LiveControl_mac.zip

I have the same problem. The first time I tried connect osc with Live, I didn’t install Midi Yoke, and I was able to connect LiveControl with osc and with Live, but even though the red box appeared, my osc interface didn’t update and I was not able to use the app at all. I thought the problem was that I hadn’t downloaded Yoke, and after I did, I arrived at the same problem you have and that I have now.

I should have just used TouchAble…

    • juaan

heeelp please , all is already connected and my ableton live 9 doesnt play when i click on mi tablet android samsung galaxy , heelp please i do all the things..

    • Daniel Fish

Hi there, text in LiveControl app is not appearing, all text areas blank, any thoughts?

    • Jeff

Help please. I run ableton live 8 launchpad addition and went through all these steps to connect my iPad 2 with touchOSC thru livecontrol (version 1). All seemed in order when I opened up a session, tracks were named, all effects from ableton showed up on the iPad, metronome indicator lines up, etc. but I can’t control anything going on in ableton from the iPad. Any ideas?

    • b1kjsh

I’m having some issues with the view in the TouchOSC updating with the track information. So far i’ve been able to get it to connect and all the buttons work… but I don’t see any of the track names or clip names or any of that really… I’m using the android version btw. Has anybody see similar behaviour?

    • b1kjsh

I’m having this same issue on Android…

    • b1kjsh

I had this issue as well. this was because I was using the livecontrol 2 app instead of just livecontrol. Because of this I couldn’t get my android device to connect properly. But now that I’m using the right version I can now connect but none of the text appears in the app 🙁

    • b1kjsh

I did this but I still don’t get any labels 🙁

    • Matthew Fargher

I’ve just done the quick run around installing Live Control 2. Nothing doing for windows: It ONLY works with lemur. The above page instructions are good for us windows users, live 9.1.2, TouchOSC latest version.

Id love an updated Live control for ANDRIOD…..

    • Andy Christoforu

    • Kareem Ankhmusic

the most frustrating and time wasting experience. And support does not support shit. I dont understand the hype and how did they release from the first place. What I really dont believe is how did Ableton put this on its website!! what kind of revenue sharing agreement made them post this as a controller for LIve. I purchased the app and been on it and my computer for the past three days trying to make it work with traktor or ABleton and its all useless. My computer has the highest specs but it started crashing and getting slow since I started connecting the app with the computer and its all uselss.

    • Paul Greenleaf

I can control Ableton using the ‘Simple’ template and some other templates show midi signal is working but I need to use the ‘LiveControl for iPad’ template, which doesn’t work (similarly ‘Live Control’ not working). Any suggestions, much appreciated!

    • Avi Bortnick

      I’m having the same issue.

    • Farmatique Kindarush

Thanks, DEF, it helped me! I am able to control ableton parameters, but livecontrol layout on android still doesnt show appropriate info from ableton (I mean names from clips and stuff like that)

    • What if I can see the folder is installed in the remote scripts folder, but it’s not showing up in the dropdown in Live’s preferences? Do you know if this is still supported in Live 9.7.3?

    • fuck
