Are you on windows or osx and where is python installed? If theres no red ring there is either a problem with python, or the program cant bind to the local ip address.

and i have check again and again to my ip in the txt file and it seems i didn t do a mistake …

same for me here.. i am on win XP, ableton 8.0.1, python 2.5.1. is there a way to check if the python installation works fine ableton (apart from seeing the red ring)?

Are you on a 169.x.x.x ip range? Also can you try with the latest release of Ableton Live, i havnt tried it with pre 8.1. The config file is in C:Usersyour user name correct? I’ll test this on my windows 7 system when i get a chance

Maybe the simple process of uploading the template via TouchOSC Editor should be added to the installation description. It took me some time to figure out it works out when started with the sync-button within TouchOSC Editor. I found the path-descriptions rather confusing, too. “Right-click: Live.app -> show package contents” would be less confusing.
I am on OSX 10.6.3 and use an iphone 3GS as the remote-device and everything worked out when I did it exactly as described above.

Yes i agree about uploading the template. Its just assumed knowledge at the moment, ill make those instructions clearer. I’ll fix the bit about the path on mac too 🙂

I follow every step but at the end it works only 4 faders & 3 buttons.. why?

Everything is working if I use an external wi-fi connection. But if I create a network with my mac and I connect the Iphone to it, there is some trouble.
The connection from mac/live to Iphone/touchOSC is OK but the connection from IPhone/TouchOSC to mac/Live is not working most of the time.
Any idea about this problem ? How can I connect my Iphone with touchOSC to my mac without an internet wireless connection ?

I’m starting to go mad about this 😀 I installed python, put the unzipped txt and directory where they belong and uploaded on ipad the template. When i select livecontrol_to as control surface what i should put as input and output? The networking works, if i open osculator and set it to listen on 5000 it recognizes all commands on the ipad (nav,fader even accellerometer), but i can’t understand how to make it work on ableton! What i’m doing wrong? All is in the right place and network is working… Plz help :*

Osculator should be closed before you open ableton. Osculator is not required for this to work. If you grab the latest zip (i changed some things last night) it doesnt need python to be installed either. Do you get the red box in ableton when you select the control surface? If not something is wrong with your ip settings in the config file.

connecting via ad hoc wifi…do i use the Wireless adapter’s IP address or the main computer internet card as the IP. that part confuses me.

It should be the ip of the wireless card if you are using an adhoc network

Ok thanks i fixed the ip issue! There’s only one lasting strange bug, in the clip matrix the buttons on the far right wich are assigned to: up down left right, stop all clips and shift gets the name from the first 6 scene names and actually became scene launch buttons! Even if i scroll down from another page (cant from clip matrix because the rename/remap issue) those buttons remain mapped to only the first four scenes. Am i doing something wrong?

hi i am using live 8.0.8 on vista and touchosc 1.4.2 on ipod touch OS 3.0. ableton can send sinals to the touchosc but touchosc cannot control ableton. any tips?

Wow now it’s almost perfect!! Just a last mini issue, do you visualize track’s names in MIXER view? In clips view i have all the track names displayed but in mixer view just tr1 tr2 and so on. BTW excellent work!!!!!

I can get everything to work perfectly when I am connected to a network, but when I create a network with my Macbook Pro and connect directly with my iPhone, I can’t figure out the IP addresses for each. How do I find each device name so I can use that instead, like Gosha said previously?

Does the installer not show touchosc and hence its ip address? Get IP should list all your local ip addresses too:

Just wanted to thank you for such wonderful work! Grabbed the initial version for my ipod a couple weeks ago after the CDM write-up…the updated version (114) is amazing! No issues setting up…the new ‘configuration’ window is a breeze.

I'm going to try and move the installer over to bonjour hostnames instead, so you wont need to configure the ips each time. The hostname shouldnt change between ip changes

Some people have been running osculator on the same ports as LiveControl. If OSCulator is started on the livecontrol ports, livecontrol wont be able to bind to it and wont work.

You're fine to run osculator on any ports other than 5000/5001 though 🙂

I removed the old LiveControl_TO folder before installing, but when I ran the installer, it didn't install anything (even though the installer thinks it did). When I run Ableton Live, LiveControl_TO no longer shows up among my advanced control devices. I checked the MIDI Remote Scripts folder after installation and there's nothing in it related to LiveControl. Is the installer working with OS 10.5.8? If I reinsert the old LiveControl_TO folder manually, what missing elements do I need to add from the new installer?

I used Ableton Live but i'm a vj, not a musician. do you think its possible to make some app like this but to work with vidvox's vdmx? its a vj program and work very fine with osc protocol. I used TouchOSC with vdmx but i want to assign every parameter, like in any other app, i guest…

Also, When I select LiveControl in the “Found Hosts” section of TouchOSC, nothing happens, but the network activity icon (circular thing next to the WiFi icon) continually circles around.

i personally do not have itunes installed on my windows box, if you dont you need the bonjour services.

have you loaded the template in touchosc? TouchOSC doesnt register the service until the template is actually loaded and running.

Selecting the found host “livecontrol” option just changes the host field, it doesnt connect or anything

I'm trying this on windows, and even though it says “installation complete”, the livecontrol_TO option isn't in the MIDI menu.

I simply cannot find the right directory or the installation simply isn't working
I have osx 10.6.3, live suite 8.1 (it was free…), and when I browse to select the live directory under applications, it is grayed out, even when manually inputing /Applications/Live.app it goes thru the motions of installing but I cannot find the LiveControl preset from the control surfaces.
Please advise I would def consider donating to the cause if I could get this up and running, and appreciate your hard work very much.

erm it should be something like /Applications/Live x.x.x/ not directly into the Live.app. The program appends the path Live.app/Contents/App-Resources/MIDI Remote Scripts

Always get tha same “connection failed! – Timed out” error in TouchOSC.
Don't use firewall or something.I can use TouchOSC's layouts with Ableton but can't load

Here are the Network settings i've put in TouchOSC:

Host: 192.168.1.6 (my ethernet's local IP)
Port OUT: 5000
Port IN: 5001
Local IP address: 192.168.1.5

you dont need the iac drivers for this to work, it doesnt have any midi input/output as such. Do you get the red ring when you select the midi remote script?

Can you enable debugging and start the log server then start Live. You should get some debug output you can email me.

Works ok with my liveset (8 tracks, 150 scenes or so). do you have non ascii characters in your clip names?

do you have a firewall running?

You can try an ip in the TouchOSC network settings instead of a hostname. Should be the same as the local computer ip in LiveControl config page

make sure you have the very latest version of the TouchOSC editor. Redownload from hexler.net if needbe.

just make sure live control see's the ipad in the automatic box. the way it comes up is once you hit done in the ipad setup, it should pop up.

Hi, I'm running Windows and have everything else working except for one small thing. I managed to get the drum pads and keyboard working one time, but only after clicking yes to a prompt that was asking me to allow the LiveControl software internet access. I've tried clicking the “Start Router” button again in order to use the pads and keys, but I am no longer getting a prompt from my computer to allow LiveControl access to connect. Is anyone else having this problem, and if so any solutions?

Using IPs or bonjour names? Try IPs if using Bonjour names, sometimes TouchOSC cant find your bonjour host and so cant send data back to ableton

there isnt at the moment, but its not difficult to add. Just have to work out on which template to put it

ideally it would be most useful on the launcher page, although where is another matter. for me it would be more helpful then the time on the set, but guess some people find that more useful. would it still work if you had it at the bottom in stead of the 7th row of clips ? as you can always scroll down to the next lot ? ill leave it in your more then capable hands

Everything works fine here except when trying to route I'm getting an error message that “could not bind to router touchosc port 5000” and so TouchOSC doesn't wanna up update with the drum pads page. Any idea what's going wrong? Thanx!

Is it possible to have the internet connection coming from the ipod/ipad to a laptop?

[SOLVED] I've manage to solve this issue by uploading the template manually via SSH client WinSCP (Windows) or Cyberduck (Mac)…The trick to use these clients is to have a jailbroken iPhone of course.Thanks to ST8's solution you need to rename the “livecontrol.touchosc” to “livecontrol.zip” and extract the content to iPhones TouchOSC directory at the 2 template locations…

just updated the windows installer

The Port fields are gone in the LiveControl application. It shows both the local and ipad ip addresses….and everything is working but I cannot configure the router portion of the software. When I select enable router the ips don't default to 4000 they stay at 5000…and I cannot access the port fields anymore????

Don't know if it helps but I noticed that the labels are returning the wrong names. And the indicator for the control is returning the right info for the parameter it is controlling. So think you just need to fix the labels. Hopefully this makes it easier for you. Thanks again. You Da Man!

Got it working. Pretty sure my computer was just being weird. Ran the installer again just now after my PC had been off all night, got the same messages but this time it just worked. Works absolutely great and is giving me a depth of control with live which the keyboard and mouse wasn't. I'll send a wee donation your way for some outstanding work 🙂

I also had to allow ports 5000 and 5001 to UDP traffic otherwise I got no communication between TouchOSC and LiveControl.

On Windows XP, Live 8.1 I've got it working (without router) by opening ports 5000, 5001, but it's really slow to react, even to mouse actions, any idea why? Also I can't get the router part to work yet, even with Windows firewall disabled. I'm not using midiOx, I have something called IPMidi which should do the same job.

If you're not receiving any data from TouchOSC to ableton then either, the hostname selected in TouchOSC is wrong, or you have a firewall running which is blocking incoming traffic.

You dont need any midi ports unless you want to us the keys/drums page. Most of the scripts talks directly to ableton and does not need midi to functions.

Sounds like the same issue as other people, the bonjour hostnames aren't being resolve. Selec “Use IP Addresses instead of hostnames” and reselect your device from the automatic configuration list

It was working perfectly, and then i lost the communication from live to the ipad. Tried to change ports, no change. my firewall is off, i am just so sad : it was so great when it worked !

So when I reach the point when I'm supposed to go to the install tab in LiveControl and Browse to find the Live Directory, The Live Icon under the list of applications is greyed out and I can't choose it to install, any suggestions

It needs to be pointed to the application folder which should be at “C:Program FilesAbletonLive 8.1”. If it runs successfully you will see a “LiveControl_TO” folder in the following location “C:Program FilesAbletonLive 8.1ResourcesMIDI Remote Scripts”. If you do not see this folder, you can manually create it, then “install” LiveControl to a temp folder and move the files from there.

I got the exact same problem. 64 bit W7, won't show up in control surface list. Tried restarting, leaving it off, and all that.

On my 32 bit XP it shows up, and the touch recieves information from Live, but won't send any. I get the error which states something like can't lock on to ports. Also, the only thing that seems to transfer information from Live is the master fader, when I move it on the computer, it moves on the touch. Nothing else does.

The ports are open, firewires are open, I'm using ip instead of bonjour names, and I've tried anything I could find here. I promise a small donation when my grant arrives, if this could be solved…

I'm having the same exact problem – I'm able to use everything but the drums and keys.

Anytime I press the “c3” in drums I see the yellow midi note activation thing in Ableton Live but it's not hitting the drum instrument.

I tried both in Wifi and ad-hoc network and using the default port 5001 as in your tutorial but it does not want to work.

Sounds like the installer has not overwritten you old LiveControl files. When you run LiveControl Installer.jar make sure the path is something like
/Applications/Live x.x.x and not /Applications/Live x.x.x/Live x.x.x
seems to append an extra path sometimes

No LiveControl_TO in my control surface drop-down. MIDI input works for the keys and drum pads, but I can’t get the red box to show up or have any control of the session, etc. Please help!!!

Working almost perfectly….after spending a little time rechecking everything I seem to have things straight but, I am having the same problem: no drum pads or keys working. I too, am seeing the yellow indicator light in Live’s upper right. Am I missing something obvious? The only other issues I have is what appears to be the crossfader on the Launcher page doesn’t work and I don’t understand how the xy lock buttons and xy load/save work. Totally loving this, it would be great to get the pads and keys going too!

It never fails…as soon as I post after seemingly trying everything I immediately realize I’m doing something really stupid!…like not having the device track in input!!! The other two issues do still stand though maybe I’m missing something obvious there too! Thanks again for this…it is superb!

I was originally having the same problems as you: Only keys and drums working, nothing else. Open up your Live package, then remove all the scripts currently in /Contents/App-Resources/MIDI Remote Scripts/LiveControl_TO. Reinstall and everything should work fine.

Running LiveControl on an iPad to Ableton 8.1 Suite in OSX 10.5.8 on a MBP.

I downloaded the live controller MIDI script but once installed the “Live.app” is grey and covered by a white circle with a line through it.

When I click on it a dialogue box opens and says; “You can’t open the application “Live” because it is not supported on this architecture.”

I can view package contents and can clearly see the LiveControl_TO file within but it is not coming up in Ableton’s MIDI preferences, presumably because the live app is not running or being recognised.

Do I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard to run the software?

I enjoy playing a lot, great work . But after ten minutes I lose connection and I don´t receive no more signal the green light is still on and I can still launch but no more info is send to the pad.
When I switch my pad off/ on it works again but only for ten minutes.

Questions:
Do I have to start live control every time ?
Why isn’t it possible to save in live control?
What can I do?
Is it a problem with my Network ?

i´ve tryed over 4 hours now – but it won´t work as is should.
got a win 7 system and i´ve done the things as described.
i don´t understadn the meaning of the touter in livecontrol in cunjunction with midi yoke.
which ports do i have to forward ? they should be different to the regular ones (5000 and 5001). I´ve tryed 9000 and 9001 but it didn´t work … pls , need some help 😉

I am soooo close to getting this working…but something is broken. Live Control is receiving everything fine, it just cant send any data. When I launch a clip on the computer it plays on the phone, but when I try to play it from the phone nothing happens. I’ve got the red rectangle and one-way communication…I just need 2-way!

I’m using ports 5000 and 5001…is there something else I need to be doing?

I noticed that in device mode the knobs don’t seem to move smoothly, they seem to move it really large steps. So if I have an auto filter on a track, the knob for frequency moves in really large step thus not giving the ideal continuous control feel.
Am I doing something wrong? Everything else seems to work perfect.

I got the same problem (windows).Ableton receive midi from iPad (cursors and buttons on Live worx correctly) but Live don’t send darta to iPad (so all fields are empty and of course no VU meters movement,etc.).I don’t know about apc40 coz i don’t know nothing about it!

Hi, I fixed this by opening the following ports in Windows Firewall: 4000,4001,5000,5001.

Or you can disable the firewall.

the error that comes up says to check port/ip settings and they are all hooked up right the ipad is able to receive the templates fine and sometimes i can get the keyboard function to work but thats about it

I followed all the installation path, running it on Live 8.1.3. What happens is that Touchosc receives midi from ableton (if I move knobs on ableton they move on touchosc) but touchosc does not send midi to ableton. So if I touch any control on the touchosc it doesn’t make anything on ableton. Tried different configuration but could not get it to work. Any chance to get this sorted?

Thanks for this. I got everything working. Problem I have is I get a big black square inside the template once everything is connected. So half the screen is blacked out. Very strange, as I can launch clips where from the part of the screen that is visible.

I love LiveControl, so so simple and it just works and the sequencer is especially awesome, once you figure out the magical “giddy-up!” command (menu 2 and up/down). Love the two-way communication, but there’s just one little problem…haha I’m kidding no problems. That’s why I’m writing this note of thanks, I hate so many things in this vain, love-starved world, but LiveControl ain’t one of them! That’s a dub negative which means thanks for your great template.

In Abletone’s MIDI preferences I have no Input MIDI ports. I can see the UI on my iPad, I can even change things but I can’t figure how to use the drums and keys. ._.

Hi! Livecontrol is ace, I have just one issue, it is the latency, I am running ableton 8.1 & 8.2 on MBP 10.6.8 I have tried both my home wifi and a creating a network from my mac in an attempt to reduce the lag, seeing as touchosc works through osculator with minimal, is the same possible with livecontrol?

I’ve downloaded the most recent version of live control, but the .jar file won’t open on my computer, it keeps telling me that that the file can’t run on my type of computer. I have an intel core 2 duo macbook pro. I checked to see if my javascript needs to be updated, and it too is current. HELP!

I get the error 
Program not supported on this type of mac computer, on the live control installer. Ie its only 64 bit? Is there a workaround or should I just get up to date..

Just a small tip to anyone who’s having a problem installing MIDI Yoke on windows 7 like I did, and therefore couldn’t use the keys/drums:
When I tried to install MIDI Yoke it got always stuck in the middle saying it got interrupted. What I did to solve this was to run the installation as an administrator. But it wasn’t that easy because the file is a .msi installation file, so I had to run it as an administrator from the command line. To do so you should find the command line tool from the start menu, then right-click, and run as administrator. Then from the command line run your file with “msiexec /i MidiYokeSetup.msi” from the folder your file was downloaded to.

Latest download finally worked with Live 8.3 but I cant find any templates for the TouchOSC editor anywhere!

I am hoping that within the editor template there is a way set up adjust tempo and delete clip.

The latest version of touchosc allready has the template included 🙂

Had the same problem. After checking that LiveControl_TO was in the right folder: Ableton->Contents->App-resources->MIDI Remote Scripts, I just restarted Live and suddenly I was able to choose LiveControl TO. Now it works!

To everyone on Mac OSX having the “LiveControl Installer” is not supported on this architecture problem, here’s how I was able to manually install the LiveControl_TO remote midi scripts:

Right click the LiveControl Installer file and click “Show Package Contents”

In this folder, navigate to Contents –> Resources, and copy LiveControl_TO.zip to your desktop.  

Unzip the file, and you’ll see a newly created LiveControl_TO folder filled with .py files.

Go to your Applications folder –> Live x.x.x (or wherever your ableton live folder is) 

Right click on the Live application icon, and again, click “Show Package Contents”

Navigate to Contents –> App-Resources –> MIDI Remote Scripts, and place the LiveControl_TO folder that we unzipped earlier into the MIDI Remote Scripts folder.

Make sure you correctly followed all other installation steps, and be sure to restart ableton as well.  Hope this helps!

I’m having the same problem with knobs both with LiveControl and TouchAble (also OSC-based). Don’t know what to do, this issue ruins all the plans on using this in other ways awesome way of controlling.

Justin, did you triple check to make sure you have OSC enabled in Connections? I almost made that mistake. OSC should be enabled, Midi Bridge disabled, Midi Mobilizer disabled, and core midi enabled. THEN you need to make sure both devices are properly connected to an Ad Hoc network or other network.

Is it just me or is the Mac installer/ app not working?

can never find anything under the “connected device” tab of LiveControl. I did
install the MidiYoke and the “touchosc-bridge” program, and they both appear
under the “midi port” tab. Still, no matter what midi port I choose, the “connected
device” tab remains empty.

Last night I installed TouchOSC and LiveControl exactly as instructed in the video. They’re working with Live 8.3.4 beautifully. No problems whatsoever.

I was having the issue that many have reported, with the iPad being able to control Live but no labels or control changes being received by the iPad from Live. The cause was cached network settings on the iPad that were no longer valid, namely an IP address that functioned on my network but was unreachable by the host machine. The fix was to reset the network settings on the iPad. Just renewing the IP address is not enough, it will not flush bad IP information completely. You will have to reenter any wireless connection information you had stored. OH MAN… this is the best thing I’ve used since I bought my first copy of Live. Awesome work, ST8!

Had the same problem. Solved it checking firewall settings and making sure the LiveControl application is allowed to send and receive in the local network. if you are using other than the Windows firewall, make sure UDP incoming/outgoing traffic is allowed for LiveControl

anyone getting a ‘bind to port 5000 unsuccessful’ error? You’d see it in the max window for the live control os x app. Using 10.6.8, live 8.3.4. I’ve used live control for a while now but never had this problem. Changes in live will reflect in live control on ipad, but live control will not send data to live itself.

LiveControl works over OSC, which is why neither the bridge nor, the 30 pin connector will work with it, sorry

I got it set up exactly like this, except im on a pc using “loopbe1” instead of midi yoke. it says control surface 1 ready to use, but the red box never shows up. and i cant control anything… what can i do?

it work with specific ports on the idevice (configure it in touchOSC>OSCsetup) :
out port = 5000
in port = 9000
… it works for me…

when i select livecontrol to in the remote script section in live, the red box is not as big as its supposed to be, and i cant control anything. it looks like its thinking i have an iphone, but i have an ipad. please help

Hi, I’d really like to use this software (in fact I did use it on Ableton 8 on another computer briefly) but am having serious difficulty getting it onto my new machines with Ableton 9. I see that the video has a different approach to what’s in the installer folder. Which is most up-to-date? Which procedure is best to follow? I have tried to install twice and then uninstalled everything I’ve downloaded to be safe so I could start again. I get recognised devices but nothing in the Touch OSC Editor. If I try to open the TouchOSCiPad.touchosc layout in the Editor nothing happens. I’ve been to hexler and here to re-download all files but nothing’s happening. I’m finally beginning to unravel and go insane.

Hi, I recently went through each step of the install again as I’ve upgraded to Live 9 and wanted to be sure all elements were up to date. I’m having the same problem as I’d previously had which is that the drums and keys pads are showing no signs of control in Ableton. The right hand panel of each of these tabs is having the desired effect, I just cant actually get any sounds from either tab. I’m hoping its a simple fix or I’ve just missed something obvious but everything I’ve tried so far is getting me nowhere.

Just installed touchOSC 1.9 on a Nexus 7 (Android…yay!) and things seem to be working OK, but for some reason the livecontrol ipad template only displays 4×8 instead of 8×8 (including live’s green focus box). I can trigger the other scenes in touchOSC they’re just not labeled. Any solutions?

greetings. please, help me. i’m loosing my mind with this issue. here we have 2 computers, pc & laptop, both with ableton, livecontrol, disabled firewalls and the same wifi lan. everything works fine in the pc but in the laptop livecontrol can not detect any midi signal from pads an keys, but everything else works fine. my tablet is a tf-101.
also I tried midiloop and midiyoke. what could i have done wrong?

I have the same problem as “Coolout”. Focus ring is the size of Iphone (4×8) not the Ipad (8×8). I have a large ACER Android tablet. Furthermore, there is some kind of offset on the launch-button ( [tracks, Scene] : lines are respected [1,1] on tablet = [1,1] on live & [1,2] on tablet = [1,2] on live. However clip launch is going diagonal when i follow column (scene) direction by clicking down [1,2] on the tablet = [2,2] on live , [1,3] on the tablet = [3,3] on live). Only the Iphone template works correctly. I tried : “you should add [Ipad] to ZeroConf Name, in osc settings” with no luck. It is a great peace of software, however with this problem, not really usable on Ipad template. Any solution around?

Some thoughts for PC users:

I finally got this working but there are a few things that I had to dig for that weren’t apparent to me when I started.

1. The Live Control template is located in the touchosc-editor-1.6.0-win32.zip file. I have since seen (somewhere) where it said this but it took me a while to find.

2. You will need to install the touchosc bridge from the hexler website. This differs from the mac installation video in that the bridge will be your midi in/out in Live’s preferences. It will also need to be selected as your midi port in the LiveControl window on your PC.

3. I had to install 32 and 64 bit java on my machine in order to install Live Control. You will have to look on Java’s website for the appropriate installer, as Java will detect the one that it thinks you need.

Other than that, the tutorial video helped me to get this thing up and running. Without it, I may not have been able to do it.

Hey Ed, I was having the same problem. The Mac zip is definitely corrupt. But if you browse the source files in the SVN you can find old versions of the download. Help please. I run ableton live 8 launchpad addition and went through all these steps to connect my iPad 2 with touchOSC thru livecontrol (version 1). All seemed in order when I opened up a session, tracks were named, all effects from ableton showed up on the iPad, metronome indicator lines up, etc. but I can’t control anything going on in ableton from the iPad. Any ideas?

looks like you can’t get the template from the website its saying this site is not available and without the template this program won’t install, all you get is this folder don’t exist so it turns out this program is crap

the most frustrating and time wasting experience. And support does not support shit. I dont understand the hype and how did they release from the first place. What I really dont believe is how did Ableton put this on its website!! what kind of revenue sharing agreement made them post this as a controller for LIve. I purchased the app and been on it and my computer for the past three days trying to make it work with traktor or ABleton and its all useless. My computer has the highest specs but it started crashing and getting slow since I started connecting the app with the computer and its all uselss.

What if I can see the folder is installed in the remote scripts folder, but it’s not showing up in the dropdown in Live’s preferences? Do you know if this is still supported in Live 9.7.3?
